PHOENIX, AZ -They are names recognized around the world,
names shrouded in mystery and tragedy - Carpathia, Princess
Sophia, Mary Celeste. They all met their demise at sea
and became some of the most famous shipwrecks the world
has ever known. Now, in a new series on National Geographic
Channel, the stories surrounding their fates are revealed.
Based on Clive Cussler's best-selling non-fiction book
of the same name, THE SEA HUNTERS follows the adventures
of Cussler, marine archaeologist James Delgado, Master
Diver Mike Fletcher and team leader John Davis as they
travel the globe and plumb the depths of the world's
oceans to solve some of the greatest maritime mysteries
the world has ever known. Uncovering famous shipwrecks
in each hour-long episode, the series recreates the
compelling stories of some of Cussler's most celebrated
discoveries and reveals their sunken treasures with
the help of the latest advanced underwater technology.
THE SEA HUNTERS premiered July 1st internationally as
part of "Adventure Starts Here" with Toyota.
U.S. fans are encouraged to contact the National Geographic
Channel to request that all 13 shows be aired in the
U.S.
"Providing adventure tales is only one chapter
of my existence," said Cussler. "I'm addicted
to the challenge of the search, whether it's for lost
shipwrecks, airplanes, steam locomotives or people."
Underwater adventure and storytelling is the heart
of THE SEA HUNTERS. From the Pacific Northwest to the
Northern Atlantic and from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean
Seas, the series follows Cussler and his team of experts
around the world as they take viewers to the depths
of the ocean floors for a close-up look at the team's
most interesting discoveries. Dramatic, compelling,
and personal, each episode tells the history of the
historic vessel, recreating the fateful journey and
documenting how each ship met her end.
Driven by insatiable curiosity and with the help of
recent advances in deep-sea technology, Cussler and
his team unlock tantalizing secrets of the deep and
solve mysteries etched in the public mind, including:
The Search for Carpathia
Most well known as the ship that braved frozen ice
fields at full speed to rescue 706 survivors from the
sinking Titanic, Carpathia's glory was short-lived.
THE SEA HUNTERS travel 300 kilometers off the coast
of England to uncover her final resting place and tell
the story of her dangerous rescue and journey back to
New York.
Sunk on Christmas Eve, the story of the Leopoldville
and the Clayoquot. The Leopoldville was a Belgian liner
converted into troop transport during World War II.
Torpedoed by German U-Boat on Christmas Eve, 1944, off
Cherbourg, France. More than 800 American GIs died in
the tragedy. At the same time, off the coast of Canada,
the Clayoquot met a similar fate at the hands of a U-Boat.
The Andrea Gail
The hapless fishing boat profiled in the book and movie
THE PERFECT STORM eludes THE SEA HUNTERS as they search
treacherous weather conditions for her watery grave.
Secrets of the Snow Ship, the Russian Vrouw Marie
In 1771, Catherine the Great of Russia lost her famous
treasure ship in the Finnish archipelagos. Once again
the Sea Hunters bare witness to a cultural gem which
closes a gap in the historical record, joining the past
with the present. It is a fascinating glimpse into an
18th century time capsule.
Mary Celeste
Known throughout history as the fabled Ghost Ship,
the Mary Celeste was found sailing off the Azores in
1872 ghost-like with no one aboard. Her captain, his
wife, two-year-old daughter and entire crew inexplicably
vanished. After the eerie abandonment, the ship sailed
under different owners for twelve years, until her last
captain attempted to sink her for an exorbitant insurance
claim. In this episode, THE SEA HUNTERS travel to the
coast of Haiti where they discover this famed ghost
ship, writing the final chapter of her last days.
The Hunley, The First Kill
Sleek, black vessels that strike from beneath the waves,
nuclear submarines are the ultimate weapons in naval
warfare. With tremendous psychological power, these
deadly vessels hurl missiles from the ocean's depths
striking targets at nearly any point on globe. THE SEA
HUNTERS travel to the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean
in search of the remains of two vessels that introduced
submarine warfare to the world: Germany's U-21 and the
innovative underwater fighting ship, the H.L. Hunley.
In the international series, each of the 13 one-hour
episodes comes full circle when Cussler and his team
document the trouble, frustration, and peril encountered
while trying to find the sunken wrecks, walking viewers
through the immense research and careful preparation
necessary for hunting the long-lost vessels.
